World Trade Organization Secretariat
On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the multilateral trading system (GATT/WTO), the World Trade Organization (WTO) organized a symposium to discuss and analyze the current and future role of the world trading system. The rapid developments in the 1990s - not only political, but also economic and technological changes - have brought the WTO to a turning point in its existence. The new challenge, as the Director General stated in his opening remarks at the symposium, is not just to advance free trade against the forces of protectionism. The WTO's future agenda should also look at how investment and competition laws affect market access; whether differing labour or environmental standards confer a trade advantage and how this should be dealt with; whether taxation and innovation policies constitute a subsidy; whether governments should be allowed to regulate content on the Internet. These and other issues are a world away from "traditional" trade concerns such as tariffs or quotas, and yet all are included, in one form or another, on the new trade agenda. In this topical collection of essays, academics in international trade take a fresh look at the future of the global trading system and give an analysis of the new trade agenda. 183pp.

Shim,Dr. Young
This work presents a critical analysis and evaluation of the Korean banking regulatory and supervisory system. It identifies the continuing structural weaknesses of the system, which were thrown into sharp relief by the 1997 financial crisis, and focuses on the need for reform in order to achieve financial stability. The study centres around three central questions: who should be the regulator; what substantive standards of supervision should be applied; and administratively, in what manner should these standards be applied? The author argues that the Korean banking system, characterized as a "governmental control system" for credit allocation, should be released from undue governmental and political interference, thus allowing the involvement of banks in commercially oriented practices without exposure to the significant risks incurred by governmental policy directed lending. The author calls for a high degree of transparency and accountability, for a clear, realistic timetable for restructuring, and for an effective exit policy for troubled commercial banks. This text should be of value to practitioners, researchers and academics working in the field of banking law, particularly those with a special interest in the Asia-Pacific region. 226pp.

Windsor, Philip; Edited By Berdal, Mats
Philip Windsor (1935-2000) is widely acknowledged to have been among the brightest and most penetrating of thinkers in International Relations. This book brings together some of his most exciting and stimulating essays, covering many of the classic and most enduring issues in International Relations: the causes of wars; intervention and the use of force; the regulation of conflict; human rights and the tensions between order and justice. Windor's philosophical bias, together with his elegant prose and sheer breadth of knowledge, gave an underlying coherence and unity to all his writings. The essays include brilliant essays on East-West relations during the Cold War, arms control, Clausewitz's contribution to strategic thought, Henry Kissinger's scholarly contribution and the place of human rights and cultural dialogue in international politics. 246pp.
