Edited By Elliott, John
Teacher education and training in the UK is under attack from the New Right and government policy-makers have been sufficiently influenced by its ideas to threaten the very existence of higher education-based teacher training. The attack has been very much directed toward theory-based training which is accused of promoting progressive theories that are politically biased in favour of left-wing egalitarian ideology. The over all effect, it is argued, is a failure to raise standards. The New Right, aided and abetted by the tabloid press, wants to see the removal of teacher training from higher education, and for it to be unambiguously located in the schools, where it can be linked to the "theory-free" development of practical skills. Elliott and his contributors do not offer a defence of current practice, but do provide a rationale for the continuing role for higher education while at the same time moving toward a more experimentally-based professional preparation. They articulate in some detail that the practice of teaching is neither a matter of applying ideas derived from theory rather than experience, nor simply a matter of applying instrumental technical skills, learned on-the-job, to produce standardized and measurable end-products. Teaching is best viewed as a practical science in which the relationship between theory and practice is interactive. Practical skills are not simply technical in character, but structured by values and understandings of how to act consistently with them.Previous owner's signature on ffep.265pp.

De Winne, Lena
The author has the distinction of being the only wife of a European astronaut who has also worked in the area of human spaceflight. Her story is told from a unique perspective. Lena De Winne provides a first-hand account of the ins and outs of the complex astronaut spaceflight system. This book captures the individual stories of crewmembers Roman Romanenko, Bob Thirsk, Frank De Winne and their spouses Julia, Brenda and Lena, as they prepare and embark on a unique spaceflight mission. Delivered with raw emotional intensity, it reads like a novel, sharing the aspirations, anguish, surprises and disappointments of its subjects. Yet it is resolutely biographical, offering a vivid recollection of events as they happened. An easy but precise overview of space science and technology is also provided. Readers will not only become familiarised with the human space flight program, they will also be left with an exhilarating sense of having been a part of the adventure. The book is suffused with an intimacy and honesty that renders the lives of the crew and their spouses in an unprecedented light. 172pp.

Broderick, Terry R.
Information technology is continuing to transform global communications and the world economy with innovative products and services. In this dynamic environment, events tend to be market-driven and it may be difficult for the regulators to keep up. At the same time, there is a need for public authorities to promote effective competition within a clear, coherent, and predictable framework. This reference work summarizes the major rules and policies for information technology at European level. It describes the institutional framework and general policies for the "information society", examines the detailed rules for external trade, competition and intellectual property, and discusses the Internet and electronic commerce. It provides an excellent overview of the subject as well as a good starting point for additional research on particular issues. This work should be of interest to practising lawyers, corporate counsel, business executives, consultants, academics, and government or trade association officials. Base spine slightly bumped.104pp.
