Nicks, Joan; Grant, Barry Keith
This book closely examines some of the myriad forms of popular culture in the Niagara region of Canada. Essays consider common assumptions and definitions of what popular culture is and seek to determine whether broad theories of popular culture can explain or make sense of localised instances of popular culture and the cultural experiences of people in their daily lives. Among the many topics covered are local bicycle parades and war memorials, cooking and wine culture, radio and movie-going, music stores and music scenes, tourist sites, and blackface minstrel shows. The authors approach their subjects from a variety of critical and historical perspectives and employ a range of methodologies that includes cultural studies, textual analysis, archival research, and participant interviews. Altogether, the book provides a richly diverse mapping of the popular culture of a particular area of Canada and demonstrates the complexities of everyday culture. 376pp.

Chronic hepatitis has been the focus of intense scientific research for decades and considerable progress and new insights into its pathogenesis and resulting therapeutic strategies have been made. Replication of hepatitis B and C viruses and details of its life cycle in the host have been well characterized. Immunology in general and immunopathology of the liver in viral and autoimmune hepatitis have shown more specific mechanisms of host defence and new models of autoimmune aggression have been developed. The role of apoptosis in liver damage is now well appreciated and has been analyzed precisely. Essential steps of fibrogenesis as a consequence of chronic liver damage are now better understood and new strategies for its prevention have evolved. Chronic hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cell carcinoma, the molecular basis of which has been more clearly elucidated. This increasing knowledge should provide a sound basis for more effective therapy in chronic hepatitis and its life-threatening consequences. This book, the proceedings of the Falk Workshop on Chronic Hepatitis, held in Cologne, Germany, on January 27-28, 2000, brings together experts from different fields of research such as virology, immunology, pathology, cell and molecular biology, as well as clinical medicine, and discusses in depth the novel findings in basic and clinical research.275pp. N.B.Slight fading to d/j spine.

Edited By Gokal,R.,Khanna,R.,Krediet,R.Th. And Nolph,K.D.
In 1994, the expert knowledge of Ram Gokal and Karl D. Nolph, the two foremost figures in the field of peritoneal dialysis, was combined to produce the first edition of the Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis. Since its conception, however, our understanding of peritoneal dialysis related physiology, kinetics and clinical outcomes, as well as the concepts of intraperitoneal chemotherapy, has increased sufficiently to make an updated and completely revised edition of the work necessary. An expansion of the editorial team by fellow-experts Ramesh Khanna and Raymond Krediet enabled an even more comprehensive approach to be taken. 862pp.
