Green, Karen
Previous owner's signature on ffep. This important and timely book challenges the direction taken by much recent work in the field of feminist studies. It mounts a powerful defence of humanism - a tradition of which many contemporary feminists have been sharply critical. Many feminists have viewed 'reason' and 'rationality' with deep suspicion. They have argued that reason was constructed by male philosophers in a way that excluded feminine traits: the man of reason was a masculine fiction. But this rejection of humanism assumes that there is only one tradition of humanism and only one conception of the rational individual. By carefully re-examining the texts of a feminist humanist tradition, Karen Green uncovers a different conception of the rational individual - a 'female version of rationality'. She captures the specificity of women's thought through a careful examination of their writings and their differences from the work of their male contemporaries. On this basis, Green argues that we need to reconceptualize both rationality and liberalism. Maintaining the ideal of rationality is quite compatible with understanding ourselves as embodied, emotional creatures whose sense of self is made up of a mixture of reason and feeling. Feminist humanism can provide a firm basis for political action and a compelling defence of equal political representation for women and men.211pp.

Sandham, Fran
"Traversa" is a fascinating account of the hardships and hilarity Fran Sandham experienced during his epic solo journey on foot across Africa, from the Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean through Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania. Inspired by the legendary crossings of the great explorers, Sandham left the daily grind of London to undertake an extraordinary adventure. "Traversa" describes his brushes with danger in the form of lions and snakes, land mines and bandits, his 2-month battle with a syphilitic donkey, malaria and the everyday troubles that arise when walking across Africa. Underpinned with stories of the great explorers themselves - Livingstone, Stanley and Galton among others - "Traversa" is the written proof of Sandham's grit, determination and sheer obsession with the continent of Africa.

Edited By Zhenghua,Tao and Wolfrum,Rudiger
Although all states agree that sustainable development must be provided for at the international level, it is still impossible to foresee which environmental problems are to be dealt with by the community of States rather than by states individually. The all-important debate over the development of specific measures enforceable under international law is just beginning. This book takes a major step in the progress of that debate toward a genuine global commitment to the protection of the earth and of future generations. The essays represent a confluence of expert scholarly opinion on this vital subject in two of the world's most populous and powerful countries. The outcome of a symposium in Beijing in September 1999, organized jointly by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the German Research Association, the book emphasizes the urgent need for international co-ooperation without losing sight of the inevitable restrictions on state sovereignty inherent in solving environmental problems. 200pp.

Falk, Richard A.
In his clear-sighted, humane, and provocative way, Richard Falk calls for a revolution in thinking about the future of world order. "Explorations at the Edge of Time" develops the idea that a major cultural shift from modernism to post modernism is under way, creating both new difficulties and new opportunities in the domain of global public policy. The author observes, 'A post modem possibility implies the human capacity to transcend the violence, poverty, ecological decay, oppression, injustice, and secularism of the modern world'. Recognizing that the concepts of 'progress' and 'development' have changed due to the breakdown of the modernist consensus, Falk contends that most problems have transnational dimensions. He proposes a commitment to grassroots globalism, and he challenges aspiring 'citizen pilgrims' to think and act in ways that will enhance their feeling of identity with the rest of creation. Falk's 'rooted utopianism' challenges our political imagination in relation to pressing global problems and helps forge an overall vision of the future. What is at stake is the building of political understanding amidst the appreciation of unity and diversity for a hopeful entry upon the 21st Century. N.B. Some pencil annotations. Head and tail of spine and corners of boards slightly bumped. Slight mark to ffep. 255pp.
