Edited By Sorensen, Lene Bogh and Eliason, Leslie B.
These eleven essays by historians, political scientists, sociologists and anthropologists establish a foundation for appreciating the political history of Central Europe. By examining the political landscape in each country, the contributors aim to evoke the legacy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and bridge the gap between the two extreme images of Central European history. Specific topics presented include: the lost dimensions of social movements and classes; the relationship between the concepts of 'nation' and 'state'; Austrian democracy; party system development; the myth of Czech liberalism; the Sudeten-German problem; Slovak politics; the regime change in Hungary; and, the relationship between democracy and organised interests. By focusing on the consequences of past regime types, social structures and cultural contexts for democractic development, this volume presents a significant base from which future scholars can proceed on a country-by-country analysis. This is an exploration of theoretical and practical implications of reflecting the fair value of liabilities for insurance companies. In addition, the contributions discuss the disclosure of these values to the financial and regulatory communities and auditing firms which are actually calculating this illusive but important variable. It combines contributions by distinguished practitioners from the insurance, accounting and finance fields, with those of prominent academics. One of the central themes of the collection is that adequate disclosure of the true economic value of insurance company liabilities is both possible and desirable. Wherever possible, the insurance valuation process is wedded with modern financial theory. For example, the use of option pricing theory is applied to insurance companies, where the true value of the firm's liabilities is a critical variable. Methods such as cash flow, earned profit and indirect discount are explored. 380pp.

The 40-year career of Balkrishna Doshi has been devoted to finding the proper balance between modern architecture and the rich indigenous traditions of India. As apprentice to Le Corbusier and friend of Louis Kahn, Doshi has worked with two of the most important pioneers of modernism on projects that have made a major contribution to both his own national tradition and the humane basis of modernism as a whole. The range of his ideas is fully explored in this book: adaptations of ancient Hindu geometry to contemporary town planning; the use of mythological figures, such as the Cobra King, as the inspiration for a free-form museum; and historical landmarks, such as the Ellora and Ajanta caves, as the basis for the design of a contemporary office building, the Diamond Bourse in Bombay. Illustrated with photographs and plans and complete with a comprehensive chronology of all the architect's works, this book should be influential not only in the developing countries themselves but also with the wider Western audience increasingly drawn to the principles of progress firmly rooted in tradition and of respect for human needs exemplified by Doshi's achievement. Slight crease to front cover. Ffep slightly marked. 208pp.

Anglophone philosophers have on the whole overlooked much of the last ten years or so of Descartes' philosophical career. In the period following publication of the "Meditations", however, Descartes was extremely active in attempting to develop a comprehensive ethics, rooted in his analysis of human passions. His work in this area grew out of a lengthy correspondence with Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia and was later systematically presented in the "Passions of the Soul". The present volume is the first collection of essays dealing specifically with this aspect of Descartes' thinking. It is thus a valuable contribution to our understanding of the first modern philosopher. Since in the "Passions", Descartes provides us with the most sophisticated and extended discussion of the composite human being anywhere in his writings, this volume is an indispensable aid to understanding the full scope of Cartesian anthropology. Just what is the nature of the passions? Does Descartes' analysis of the passions undercut his dualism? How do the passions both contribute to our good, and, if we are not careful, prevent us from recognising it? How can the passions be regulated rationally? How do the passions affect our freedom? These and other questions are addressed in these original and insightful articles, all by leading Descartes scholars.
