Diprose, Rosalyn
What sort of ethics do we need? Rosalyn Diprose argues that the usual approaches to ethics both perpetuate and remain blind to the mechanisms of the subordination of women. In Bodies of Women: Ethics, Embodiment and Sexual Differences, she claims that injustice against women is found in the social discourses and practices which both evaluate and constitute their modes of embodiment as improper in relation to men. Diprose critically analyses the attempts in both feminist and non-feminist ethics to recognise the role of sexual difference and the biomedical discourses whose descriptions mask a constitution and regulation of the 'body'. Her critiques draw on insights from Anglophone feminist theory and continental philosophy, and are supported by critical readings of Irigaray, Cornell and Fraser, Hegel, Nietzsche, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida and Foucault. What emerges is a new ethics of sexual difference which not only better locates the mechanisms of discrimination but also provides the means to subvert them. 148pp. N.B. The individual chapters in this book combine to form components of a detailed story of the local and systemic pathophysiology of intestinal inflammation, with a series of management strategies. The authors present research advances and current concepts of etiopathogenesis in the context of what is already known of the clinicopathologic features of these disorders. This book blends recent advances in the basic and clinical sciences as they relate to inflammatory bowel disease. This book is designed to illustrate the effectiveness of a team approach of basic scientists and clinician investigators in this field. It will give the reader a glimpse of where the field is moving and an idea of likely research directions in the future. 903pp.

Edited By Minnen, Cornelius A. Van and Hilton, Sylvia L.
The authors of the essays in this book amass considerable historical evidence illustrating various forms of political repression and its relationship with democracy in the United States, from the late-eighteenth century to the present. They discuss efforts, made mostly but not only by government agencies, to control actions and expressions of dissent, criticism, unpalatable truths, political opposition, or, indeed, any kind of opinions that threatened or inconvenienced powerful and privileged groups in the United States. The authors examine the justifications and multiple means of political repression, and identify individuals and social groups that have been victims of repressive attitudes and policies, because of their political ideology or opinions, or because they represented diverse racial, ethnic and religious minorities. This volume, then, is a contribution to the discussion about the paradox of the historical and ongoing existence of political repression in the United States, within a democracy which theoretically guarantees individual rights and freedoms based on equality under the law. 242pp. N.B. Bottom edge of rear cover rubbed.
