Flax, Jane
"Disputed Subjects" analyzes the assumptions behind contemporary notions of justice and knowledge and discusses why modernity cannot be emancipatory. The text explores the effects of gender relations in modern political ideas and theories of knowledge. The author identifies problematic aspects of discourses such as psychoanalysis, postmodernism and feminist theory. Special attention is paid to recurring difficulties with maternity, sexuality and race within feminist theory, and the inadequacies of postmodern accounts of subjectivity and gender. The book analyzes psychoanalysis to identify its particular organization of knowledge and power. Previous owner's signature on ffep.188pp.

Edited By Waring,M.J. And Ponder,B.A.J.
Most of the anti-cancer drugs in use today were discovered by happy accident rather than design, yet the rational design of better anti-cancer drugs remains a cherished goal, and one of the most important challenges facing medical science. This work represents a compilation of views and progress reports which illustrate the diversity of approaches to the problem. Recent research has confirmed the belief that critical genetic changes are at work in cancer cells. The genome (DNA in biochemical terms) represents a critical target for specific chemotherapy of cancer, and several chapters address the issue of attacking DNA, gene targetting, and the like. Others deal with principles of rational design, exploitation of novel modalities and targets, or the nuts and bolts of antitumour drug testing. While no attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive coverage of this wide-ranging subject, this volume aims to provide much food for thought.284pp.

Scott set out with the modest project of gathering materials for an article on Hutcheson's period in Dublin, prior to his appointment as professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow. The work grew into an extensive study, not only of Hutcheson's own life and thought, but of his place in the intellectual life of his age.296pp.

Caldwell, Steven C. (editor)
Of the 152 nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court between 1789 and 2001, 32 were not confirmed by the Senate. The 32 nominations represent 27 individuals who failed to be confirmed the first time they were nominated, however, three were later nominated again and confirmed. The Supreme Court nominations discussed here were not confirmed for a variety of reasons, including Senate opposition to the nominating President, nominee's views, or incumbent Court; senatorial courtesy; perceived political unreliability of the nominee; perceived lack of ability; interest group opposition; and fear of altering the balance of the Court. The Senate Committee on the Judiciary has played an important role in the confirmation process, particularly since 1868. These nominations have been the subject of extensive legal, historical, and political science writing, a selected list of which is included in this report. Calls for change in the Supreme Court also have been directed at three other aspects of the Supreme Court appointment process: the involvement of outside interest groups; the overall length of time taken by the process; and the process by which the Senate as a whole decides whether to confirm or reject the President's nominee. This new book also examines recess appointments of federal judges and professional qualifications for appointment to the federal judiciary. 159pp.
